Scientific Name: Biziura lobata
Size: Total Length 47-73cm (males much larger than females)
What does it look like?
The male Musk Duck arguably has the unfortunate reputation of being perhaps the most grotesque looking of all of Australia’s birds, due to a large fleshy lobe that hangs under its bill. Both sexes are sooty-brown, paler below and becoming whiter towards the abdomen. It is usually silent outside of the breeding season.
Where is it found?
The Musk Duck is found throughout south-eastern Australia (including Tasmania) and in the south-west of Western Australia.
What are its habitats & habits?
The Musk Duck inhabits deep freshwater lagoons that are interspersed with dense reedbeds. In these habitats it feeds on a variety of animals, from aquatic insects to fish and frogs.
Interesting facts
The Musk Duck gets its common name from the strong musk odour produced, by the male, from a gland on the rump.
