The Donkey (Equus asinus) was introduced into Australia and has established itself as a feral mammal

Scientific Name: Equus asinus

Size: TL c.2.5m, including Tail c.0.6m

What does it look like?

Upperparts typically pale grey-brown with a short dark mane, and dark line down shoulders and along back. Muzzle, ring around eye and underparts whitish. Ears long and erect, and tail with longer hairs towards tip.

Where is it found?

Introduced. Found in scattered populations, mainly within arid areas, the Kimberley, WA, and northern NT. Also in eastern NSW.

What are its habitats & habits?

Prefers tropical grasslands and arid uplands. Grazes and browses during the day on a range of vegetation and can eat coarser vegetation than horses. Can survive without regular access to surface water.
