Thirty years ago today, on June 26, 1995, my first book as a sole author, “A Photographic Guide To Birds of Australia,” was released. It’s a moment that fills me with immense gratitude and prompts a journey back through a life shaped by the wild beauty of Australia.

This path truly began in the woodlands of Devon, England, but it was here in Australia that it found its course. I am forever indebted to the Australian Museum, my home for two incredible decades. It was there, starting as a work experience student, that I had the profound privilege of working with and learning from giants like Walter Boles, Tim Flannery, and Ross Sadlier. Their guidance was instrumental, shaping my understanding of the natural world and scientific rigour. Those years were rich with discovery, from contributing to the identification of new reptile species to publishing my first scientific papers.

That foundation paved the way for a career in writing. Holding this first book was a surreal moment, but it was built on the experiences that came before it, including contributions to other wonderful bird books. Since then, I’ve had the honour of authoring or co-authoring sixteen books on our incredible wildlife.

A special place in my heart is reserved for the opportunities I had with Australian Geographic Magazine, penning a column for three years was a joy. I’m also deeply humbled by the correspondence I’ve shared with my childhood hero, Sir David Attenborough. His words of encouragement, especially during my teenage years, were a significant inspiration.

The greatest reward, however, comes from moments I could never have imagined 30 years ago. Meeting people—young and old—who tell me their passion for nature was sparked by one of my books is the most humbling experience. It reminds me of the profound impact that authors like Gerald Durrell and Sir David had on me as a child. To think my work might play a small part in inspiring the next generation of conservationists is a privilege beyond words.

This journey has never been a solo flight. Thank you to every collaborator, photographer, publisher, and reader who has been a part of it. My heart is full of gratitude for the opportunities to explore, learn, and share the wonders of our natural heritage. It has been, and continues to be, a life of giving back to the nature that has given me everything.
