Reptiles

(Class: Reptilia)

A diverse group of vertebrate animals that includes lizards, snakes, tuataras, turtles, amphisbaenians and crocodiles, all of which have scales. Their body temperature varies depending on their surroundings (ectothermic), and many species can be seen basking in sunlight or absorbing heat from rocks (including roads) to enable them to perform daily activities such as hunting or digesting food. Australia’s largest terrestrial carnivore is the saltwater crocodile.
