Cuckoo-shrikes

(Family Campephagidae)

Only seven of eight species recorded in Australia are still to be found here. The Norfolk Island Long-tailed Triller Lalage leucopyga leucopyga, the nominate subspecies of the Long-tailed Triller, now restricted to New Caledonia, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, was last documented on Norfolk Island in 1942. Of the remaining seven species, the Ground Cuckoo-shrike Coracina maxima is the only endemic species. All are slender, arboreal birds, the larger species shuffle their wings on landing. The nostrils are partially hidden by short bristles.
