Albatrosses

(Family Diomedeidae)

Of the 22 recognised species (19 recorded in Australia) of this family of large, wide-roaming seabirds with long, narrow wings, only the Shy Albatross Thalassarche cauta breeds solely within Australia. Others occur as regular visitors from breeding sites outside the country. Three species have been recorded as vagrants. Unlike other similar tube-nosed species, albatrosses have a small nostril on each side of the bill.
